China Visa-Free Entry in 2026: What to Check Before You Book
China has been expanding visa-free access, and many first-time visitors ask whether they need a visa at all. The honest answer depends on your passport and the dates of your trip, and some of the current arrangements have an end date. Here is how to check before you book.

Does China have a visa-free policy for tourists?
Yes, for travellers from a number of countries. China's 30-day visa-free entry arrangement was extended for many countries through 31 December 2026, and the list of eligible countries has changed over 2025 and 2026. Because the list and conditions can change, rely on the official announcement rather than a third-party summary.
How do I find out if my passport is eligible?
Check the official National Immigration Administration and Ministry of Foreign Affairs pages, or contact the Chinese Embassy or Consulate that serves you. News articles and blogs differ on which countries are covered, so treat them as background only.
What if my trip falls after 31 December 2026?
Policies that run to a stated end date can be extended, changed or allowed to lapse. At the time of writing we have not seen an official announcement covering 2027 dates, so do not assume the arrangement continues. If you plan to travel in 2027, check again closer to your booking date.
Is there a separate rule for transit passengers?
China also has a 240-hour visa-free transit arrangement for travellers from a longer list of countries who are passing through to a third country or region, with an onward ticket. It applies to transit, not to a standalone holiday, and has its own conditions. Check the official list and conditions for your route.
What documents should I carry even if I am visa-free?
A passport valid for the required period, your onward or return ticket, and your accommodation details. Requirements can be checked at the border, so keep them to hand.
Where does this fit into planning my first trip?
